Native Instruments Noire is a KONTAKT instrument that captures the sound of a 9-foot concert grand piano recorded inside Saal 3 at Berlin's Funkhaus complex. You get two distinct presentations right out of the box: Noire Pure delivers the crisp, resonant tone of the grand, while Noire Felt introduces a felt moderator layer between the hammers and strings for a softer, more intimate character. Beyond those, a set of sound-design patches stretches the raw recordings into entirely new textures.

Because it runs inside KONTAKT or the free KONTAKT PLAYER, Noire slides into any DAW that supports VST, AU, or AAX plug-in formats on a Mac running macOS 12 or later. The interface stays in English, and it's designed to map naturally to KOMPLETE KONTROL keyboards if you have one nearby. Everything lives in one place, from adjusting the velocity curve to tweaking the overtones.

What makes it feel like a real instrument is the control you have over the sound's edges. You can shape the attack and decay, push or pull the resonance, and fine-tune the tuning to match whatever else is happening in a session. The 100 included Snapshots give you quick starting points, but the real fun comes from moving the felt in and out of the picture and hearing how the same piano can go from pristine to woolly with a single parameter change.

Dig a little deeper and you'll find small gestures that make the instrument quicker to work with than it looks at first glance. Right-click any knob and it snaps back to its default value — a lifesaver when you've pushed the tonal shift a little too far. Holding Option while dragging a fader gives you fine control without needing to open a separate numeric entry, and the on-screen keyboard responds to clicks even when you don't have a controller plugged in, which is handy for auditioning tweaks on a laptop. The NKI files are also clearly split between Pure and Felt, so searching for the right starting point in KONTAKT's browser doesn't turn into a guessing game. And if you're using a KOMPLETE KONTROL keyboard, the light guide shows you which keys trigger the particles engine — no memorizing key ranges required.

Felt piano into warm texture in 20 minutes

I tend to reach for Noire late in the evening when a track needs something that sits between a polished grand and a texture. Here's how a twenty-minute pass usually plays out.

I load the Noire Felt NKI inside KONTAKT. The default state is already warm, but I dial the tone knob counterclockwise a touch — just enough to round off the top end without losing the felt's breathy attack. Then I open the particles engine and set it to a slow swirl, pulling the mix fader down to about 15 percent so the harmonics ghost behind the notes rather than overtaking them. The velocity curve gets a gentle S-shaped bend; I want soft playing to stay intimate and harder strikes to open up without jumping out of the mix.

With a simple four-chord progression held as whole notes, I let the particles engine do the movement. The swirling overtones shift subtly with each chord change, and the felt keeps the transients from poking through. I add a touch of the built-in reverb — a small room, about 30 percent wet — then route a second instance of the Pure NKI to double the top line an octave higher, blended nearly inaudibly. The two versions together, one felt and one clean, create a sound that feels composed but never stiff. Ten minutes of tweaking, ten minutes of playing, and the part's done.

Questions people ask

What are the different versions of the piano inside Noire?

Noire includes two main piano versions: Noire Pure, the natural concert grand tone, and Noire Felt, which uses a felt moderator between the hammers and strings for a muted, intimate timbre.

Can I use Native Instruments Noire without a KONTAKT license?

Yes, Noire works in the free KONTAKT PLAYER, so you do not need the full paid version of KONTAKT to load and play the instrument.
