Download Frostpunk for macOS

The Generator hums, a fragile bubble of heat in the endless white, and your people are already looking to you.
City survival — You're not just placing roads and houses. Frostpunk is about managing the hope and discontent of a population huddled around the last coal-powered Generator on Earth, making laws that define what kind of society you'll become. Every shift in temperature brings a new crisis.
Expeditions — The frost hides more than just death. You send scouting teams out into the frozen wasteland to find resources, abandoned tech, and other survivors. What they bring back can save your city, or break it.
Endless mode — This is where you really learn the game's teeth. Three variants—Endurance, Builders, and Serenity—play out across eight distinct maps with their own weather patterns. Endurance will punish every mistake. Serenity lets you breathe and build the city you actually want.
This is for players who enjoy pressure, not power fantasies. If losing a few hours of progress because a coal mine froze solid sounds infuriating, you'll bounce off hard. But if tough choices and desperate survival feel like a good Friday night, the frost is waiting.
Getting knocked around at -40°C
The first few hours in Frostpunk will knock you around. That's expected. Here's what I wish someone had told me before my first night at -40°C.
Turn off the tutorial hand-holding, but not the gameplay hints. The game explains the basics well, but the real lessons come from failing. My advice: start with a Serenity endless map, not the main scenario. Serenity gives you breathing room to learn how heat zones, road layout, and building placement interact without a death spiral every ten minutes.
Other early tips:
- Gathering posts beat direct assignment. Workers assigned straight to coal piles get sick faster. Build gathering posts around resource clusters and let them work from cover.
- Overdrive is a tool, not a panic button. Use it at night when temperatures drop, not after people are already freezing. The stress meter recovers, hypothermia doesn't forget.
- Research Beacon early. Expeditions bring in resources and people you can't produce at home. The sooner you know what's out there, the better your mid-game planning.
- Check the temperature overlay constantly. Hit the heat map button before every building placement. A workshop that sits outside a steam hub radius is just a frozen box.
A Full Workflow: Surviving the First Storm
The opening scenario throws a brutal cold snap at you around day 15. Here's how I approach the first week and a half, start to finish.
Day one through three, I focus entirely on coal and wood. Two gathering posts on the nearest piles, a workshop up by the evening, and a law signed before midnight—Emergency Shift usually, though Child Labour is tempting. I put the kids to work in gathering posts, not coal mines. It feels ugly, and that's the point. Frostpunk doesn't let you clean your hands.
By day five I want a Beacon and a scout team moving. The first expedition route usually has a few survivors and a stack of resources. Send scouts out and don't call them back early. While they travel, I research Heaters, then Steam Hubs. You need the Hub before the storm hits, not during it.
Days eight through twelve are a balancing act. I build a second medical post, rotate engineers between workshops at night, and keep the Generator running at level two. When the storm warning appears, I stop all new construction. Steel goes to upgrading the Generator and building a couple of extra houses. I overdrive at night and let discontent spike during the day. A riot is survivable; a frozen infirmary is not.
When the storm actually arrives, I cut all non-essential jobs. Hunters stay home. Sawmills close. The only people working are the medics and the engineers on Generator maintenance. Everyone else stays inside. Discontent climbs, hope drops, and I pass laws on the last day before the storm that I'd never sign in peacetime. That's the game working exactly as intended.
The storm passes, the snow settles, and you count the dead. Then you start planning for the next one. That loop—prepare, endure, rebuild—is Frostpunk's whole heart.
Rosetta shader stutter on M1 Air
On a 2020 MacBook Air with an M1, Frostpunk runs through Rosetta and still holds up well. The game loads in under a minute, though the initial shader compilation can stutter for the first few seconds after launch. Once you're in the city view, performance is steady. Panning across a crowded city with two hundred residents and a dozen buildings stays smooth, even during blizzards.
The fan kicks in during heavy snow effects and when the camera zooms across the Generator's heat zone. It's noticeable but not obnoxious. I've had a few frame drops when a storm hits and a hundred workers scramble for the medical posts at once, but nothing that ruins the moment. The game hasn't crashed once in my testing, which matters when a single autosave can be the difference between a recovered city and a frozen ruin.
Memory use is moderate—around 8 to 10 GB under load, so the 16 GB requirement is real. If you're running a browser with a dozen tabs plus a music app in the background, you'll feel it. I close everything except Frostpunk before starting a session. It's worth the ritual.
The interface is mouse-and-keyboard first, but the trackpad gestures are fine. Right-click rotate takes a day to unlearn if you come from other city builders. After that, it's muscle memory.
Frostpunk asks a lot of your Mac, but it gives back a frozen world that runs without complaining. For a game about constant crisis, the software itself is refreshingly stable.
